Are there certain street corners or intersections where you know you will see someone with a dirty bent piece of cardboard that that says homeless or will work for food. It's really interesting how people react to them...It's interesting how I react. The longer I sit at the stop light or stop sign the more I want to help. My mind races through all the usual reasons that I shouldn't...He'll probably just use the money to buy drugs or booze....He probably makes more a day than most people who work...He's probably dangerous. After my mind gets past those thoughts then it may or may not be too late to try to give him some money. It is hard for me to go past one of these guys two days in a row. What I have found is this...when I do give them money I get a personal feeling of satisfaction that comes from giving. I hope that the person makes good use of the funds...but even if he doesn't I still feel better by knowing that I was willing to give to someone less fortunate.
One day I was a few cars behind a high school activity bus in Burlington and a woman was standing in the median at a stop light with her Hungry...Need Help cardboard sign. Several windows went down and I could see young men's hands reaching out of the bus windows with money for the lady. By the time I passed her she was crying and running by the bus saying thank you...thank you. Does the heart good to see our young people caring about those who have nothing.
