Feed My Starving Children

Recently, while on a business trip to MN, the group I work with decided to spend half a day doing a volunteer activity. We chose to provide free labor to Feed My Starving Children as our project. A group of 11 of us took the training course and packaged food to be shipped overseas to children who without the assistance of the feeding program would be starving. The training videos brought tears to my eyes as I saw the before and after pictures of children who were in the program.

The food packets consisted of rice, chicken base, minerals and vitamins, dehydrated vegetables, and soy granules. The proper proportions were put in a thick plastic bag and heat sealed . We packed 36 in a box and wound up packaging 4,309 meals. That amount would feed 14 children for a year and costs just $.17 per meal. We even got the opportunity to try the meal after we finished. Believe me Ramen noodles taste better.... yet the meal is packed with protein and nutrients needed for growth and survival.

Background from FMSC website: Founded in 1987, Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) offers hope to the hungry in body around the world, and the hungry in spirit right here at home. With God's help FMSC will reduce the number of starving children throughout the world by helping to instill compassion in a generation that hears and responds to the cries of those in need. In 2005, more than 75,000 volunteers - the majority under the age of 18 - manually assembled 15 million meals for hungry children, helping to heal the world of the hurt of hunger. This food was sent to more than twenty countries, including Haiti, Jamaica, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Lesotho, Liberia, Ghana, Guatemala, Malawi, Cambodia, East Timor, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, India, and Indonesia.

By relying on volunteers to do most of the work, they limit expenses and also provide an eye-opening experience. I would highly recommend this global focused organization as a charity worth checking out. It has a four star Charity rating because of its efficiency and high percentage of donations that go directly to the feeding programs. 95% of the funds received go directly toward the feeding programs vs 5% for operating expenses.

If you are looking for a worthy cause, I would highly recommend this one!

Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor. Proverbs 22:9

there is something to be said for people who use some of their own time to help others in need.
